See-through surgical mask update!!

To all AMPHL members:

We have some VERY exciting news to report about the see-through mask project! The mask has been developed and has been tested with healthcare professionals (I believe most, if not all, are hearing). Meanwhile, the BBC (from the UK) contacted me, via AMPHL, to ask if they could use the masks in a documentary they are making on surgeries in the UK. The broadcasters wanted to show the latest technologies and also highlight accessibility in the process of documenting these surgeries. I immediately contacted the mask developer and this resulted in a flurry of events whereby the masks were rushed to the UK and they were able to be used in the filming of the documentary. We are awaiting word on when/ if the show will air on the BBC.

Meanwhile, ABC (here in the US!) has expressed interest in profiling the mask. In the pitch to ABC, the mask developers mentioned AMPHL’s involvement! However, ABC first wants the mask to be tested and used by healthcare professionals with hearing loss. This coincides nicely with the developer’s next phase which was to test this mask with people who have hearing loss. BUT we are now in a big rush as we need to get these masks tested asap. If you are willing to test the mask soon (or know anyone who is), and then fill out a questionnaire giving feedback on the mask, please email me immediately at advocacy@amphl.org. Some of you have emailed me in the past expressing interest and I will look up those emails but I need verification that you are ready and available to try them in the near future so please email me again. I will then give your contact info to the developer who may send the masks directly to you. You would need to indicate how many masks you would need. They are handmade at this point. Also, I would need your email, your profession (nursing, MD, DVM, etc.), and your mailing address.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter. AMPHL has been heavily involved in promoting this mask from the very early stages and they are counting on us to be the main testers for the deaf/ hard of hearing contingent who will be using this mask, so this is a big honor and a big responsibility!

Latest News from the President .:

AMPHL apologizes to everyone for the delay with the Fall 2008 elections and for the lack of website updates in 2008. AMPHL has gone through another rough patch this past year. In 2008, Acting President Sam Atcherson found himself in the same postion as Immediate Past President Candie Corriher in the fall of 2007 when she stepped down as AMPHL President. Sam was wearing too many AMPHL hats on top of a very busy life outside of AMPHL which included a new job and a new baby! When the Spring of 2009 rolled around and the Fall 2008 elections still had not been completed, Immediate Past President Candie Corriher stepped up to finish the elections process and to get AMPHL's ball rolling again.

Our new officers and directors are very enthusiastic and one of our first goals as AMPHL's new Executive Committee is to completely update AMPHL's website. If you are interested in helping us find new website links, articles, and updated information- please email AMPHL President Candie Corriher at president@amphl.org with your preferences for a website section to work on. She will then put you in touch with the section leader.

AMPHL needs new committee chairs (or co-chairs) for the following committees: Conference, Bylaws, Fundraising, Publicity, and Secondary School/Outreach. If you are interested in being a member or a chair of one of these committees, please contact AMPHL President Candie Corriher at president@amphl.org.

Sincerely,
Candie Corriher, DVM
AMPHL President
