Alternative Conference Funding

Got your sights on attending the AMPHL-ADARA joint conference in Baltimore, Maryland from June 1st to 4th of 2019? Pockets looking empty? No worries! I’ve written up this article to get the creative juices flowing to help you make it to the Baltimore conference — one that you will NOT want to miss!

If you are a student, you should talk to your program’s officer or academic advisor about travel grants or scholarships to defray the cost of attending the conference. Some schools offer financial support to help students receive exposure to educational experiences that otherwise cannot be attained locally. Make sure that you advocate strongly for yourself and show them the fantastic conference website and conference agenda. That way, your program can see just what a wonderful and unique training opportunity the conference will be for a Deaf/Hard of Hearing/DeafBlind student like yourself.

If you are currently a professional, healthcare systems sometimes set aside conference grants/funding for its employees to attend national conferences and workshops. Simply contact your HR department to see what financial supports are offered. You would be surprised at what some hospitals offer!

Another source of funding is through your state vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselor. They may be able to pull state funding and resources to help you cover the costs to be able to attend this essential conference.

Yet another source of funding is through your respective healthcare specialties’ national organization(s).  For example, in my particular case (as a nurse), some resources could include the National Organization of Nurses with Disabilities (NOND), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and American Nurses Association (ANA). These national organizations sometimes offer sponsorship and other resources to its members to help them fund and further their education.

Finally, AMPHL is excited to offer several merit-based scholarships to help its members to attend the conference.  Simply fill out and submit the scholarship application form by Friday, March 29th, 2019. The scholarship application can be found here. We are excited to help in any way we can to make sure you don’t miss the awesome and unprecedented 2019 conference!

Our funds may be running low during this season of giving and end of year festivities. No worries! With a little creativity and reaching out, you will find yourself in Baltimore, sharing in the 20-year celebration of AMPHL’s founding! I, for one, am looking forward to meeting, re-connecting, learning, and creating more fun-filled memories with you!
