To add your health care field to AMPHL and its website:

1)Contact the the focus group chairperson to see if there are others already working on your profession. If so, the focus group chairperson will put you in touch with them. If not, you are welcome to lead the effort.

2)Write guidelines for your profession for the AMPHL website.

3)Select a potential profession leader. This person must be Deaf/HOH and a student/graduate of the profession.

The responsibilities of a profession leader are not to be taken lightly- this person will be responsible for helping with all AMPHL related tasks for that profession to include AMPHL Forums participation, recruitment of speakers for AMPHL conferences, assistance with publicity, and regular monthly updates to AMPHL's Executive Committee.

4)Submit the guidelines and potential profession leader name to AMPHL's focus group chairperson who will then submit everything to AMPHL's Executive Committee for discussion and voting. If the guidelines and profession leader are approved by majority vote of AMPHL's Executive Committee, then said profession will then become an "AMPHL Represented Profession".

Please note that AMPHL votes on professions on a case by case basis, and submission of guidelines and a potential profession leader name does not guarantee acceptance into AMPHL.

Historical Note:

In the year 2001, a focus group ad hoc committee was created to resolve issues regarding AMPHL representation of health care fields. Originally founded primarily for Deaf/HOH physicians and veterinarians and students of those fields, AMPHL was encountering Deaf/HOH medical professionals/students from other health care fields who wanted a more equal representation within AMPHL and wanted AMPHL to offer more for their professions. After two years of intense discussion, a focus group statement was drafted for how AMPHL would represent and assist individuals with hearing loss in various health care fields. A focus group application process was created to add other professions to AMPHL. The physicians and veterinarians were grandfathered in, all other professions had to go through the focus group application process, a two step process. First the application form had to be submitted and the profession voted into phase two by majority vote of AMPHL's Executive Committee. Phase two involved writing guidelines for the AMPHL website and submission of those to AMPHL's Executive Committee for final discussion and voting. Click here to review the focus group statement and application that was released in 2003. Over the next 7 years, AMPHL added nursing, audiology, pharmacy, physician assistants, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, fire/rescue/EMT, psychology, dentistry, and podiatry. In late 2010, after many years of not receiving any applications that we had to reject, AMPHL decided to simplify the process to add new professions. Formal applications are no longer required. Now all that is needed is for interested professions to write guidelines for the AMPHL website, select a profession leader, and submit a request for AMPHL representation. AMPHL's Executive Committee then discusses and votes on the request.
