NGHI LU, MS-III
[ registry1@amphl.org ]
Nghi holds a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Utah. She is currently a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and look forward to earning her M.D. in 2006.
She was diagnosed with a progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss at a very young age. She compensated by wearing hearing aids in both ears and reading lips. In December 1998, Nghi got a cochlear implant and is now able to hear better with it. She was mainstreamed in public school, where the only accommodation she had for her hearing loss was an FM system. In college and medical school, however, she has been able to use other accommodations such as oral interpreters and real-time captioning.
While growing up, Nghi met very few individuals with hearing loss so it was exciting for her to finally know of other healthcare professionals through AMPHL. Nghi hopes to help AMPHL expand so that people with hearing loss can take advantage of its resources and know that they have colleagues elsewhere who are going through similar experiences.
