Liz is a Physician Assistant and an Assistant Professor for Western University
of Health Sciences and an adjunct faculty for the physician assistant program at
Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Her clinical
practice spans from geriatrics, internal medicine, urgent care and occupational
medicine.
Liz has a severe-to-profound bilateral sensorioneural
hearing loss. She received intensive speech therapy and was mainstreamed through
local public schools. She compensated by wearing bilateral hearing aids and
lip-reading. While in the physician assistant program she was introduced to the
real-time captioning. After graduation she uses a portable FM system for
meetings and hospital rounds. Currently, while teaching in a large lecture hall
she is using the InterpreType to capture the students’ questions. In 2004, Liz
met the minimal requirements for a cochlear implant but after further testing
was dismissed due to good speech discrimination with the use of her hearing
aids.
She earned her bachelor's degree in biology and medical
technology from Clarion State University, her bachelor’s degree in Physician
Assistant Studies from Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern
California, her master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies from University
of Nebraska, School of Medicine and her post-graduate physician assistant
certificate in forensic medicine from Arizona School of Health Sciences at A.T.
Stills University.
Liz attended an emotional AMPHL meeting in 2001; it was
exciting for her to finally know of other healthcare professionals who share
similar experiences. She would like to raise awareness of those individuals with
a hearing disability can be competent in their ability to practice as a
successful medical/ health student and professional and to make the experience
less difficult for current and future people in the medical/health professions.
Feel free to contact Liz.
