Cherylene is a final year medical student at the University of Sydney in Australia (as of 2009). After having pursued her basic education in her home country of Singapore, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Dallas (USA) in 2003 and a Masters of Science from the University of Wollongong (Australia) in 2005. She is a youth mentor in Singapore (currently by remote) and is active in a local group for Deaf & Hard of Hearing. An avid sportsperson, she is particularly active in Taekwondo for which she holds a 2nd Dan and has represented her University in Regional Games. Cherylene has a severe hearing loss since childhood and relies on bilateral hearing aids and lip-reading, she is also fluent in ASL, SEE and is currently picking up Auslan (albeit slowly). She is a strong believer in her personal motto that “Deafness plays a part in who you are, embrace it, but don’t let it limit you. Always strive for more, and never give up on your dreams and passions.”
