SAMUEL R. ATCHERSON, PhD, CCC-A
[ president@amphl.org ]
Sam holds undergraduate and masters degrees in communication sciences/disorders and audiology from the University of Georgia and Ph.D. in audiology from the University of Memphis. Sam is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Dakota teaching and supervising audiology students and conducting auditory research.
Sam has used hearing aids bilaterally for 20+ years, and he currently wears a hearing aid in one ear and uses a cochlear implant in his other ear. The cochlear implant has permitted Sam to enjoy clinical work again, and it made it easier for him to fulfill the requirements for certification in audiology. Sam's clients enjoy the fact that he can empathize with them and his ability to communicate in signed languages has proved to be helpful with Deaf/HOH clients.
He has given 30+ presentations at conferences across the country involving (re)habilitation, auditory plasticity, cochlear implantation, classroom amplification, and assistive listening devices, as well as serving on panels or roundtables for accessibility, advocacy, and awareness. Sam has worked within AMPHL a number of years holding various positions, such as Director, JAMPHL Editor-in-Chief, past Vice-President, and AMPHL webmaster. He currently serves on or has previously served on various committees, including website, focus group, bylaws, and conference committees.
