Stethoscope Use with Cochlear Implants

Not all cochlear implants have the correct frequency response for use with stethoscopes. Advanced Bionics Corporation cochlear implants have a frequency cutoff at a level higher than many heart/lung sounds. Cochlear and Med-El cochlear implants do have the capability to allow in the lower frequencies required to hear many heart/lung sounds.

Stethoscopes can be used with Body Worn or Behind the Ear (BTE) cochlear implant speech processors by interfacing through a patch cord. A silhouette such as the HATIS headset is another option for those with BTE cochlear implant speech processors.
